Winter Storm Warning in effect for Tuesday night and Wednesday morning with freezing rain in the forecast

Staff report

ALACHUA COUNTY, Fla. – A Winter Storm Warning is now in effect for Alachua County from 7 p.m. on Tuesday through 1 p.m. on Wednesday.

The National Weather Service warns that power outages and tree damage are likely due to the ice. Travel could be nearly impossible. The hazardous conditions could impact the Wednesday morning commute.

According to the High Springs Fire Department, Tuesday’s rain is expected to gradually turn to freezing rain during the late evening hours on Tuesday night and well into Wednesday morning. Up to a quarter inch of ice accumulation is possible.

HSFD also recommends taking steps to protect cold-sensitive plants and exposed pipes; bringing pets inside; and providing extra bedding, food, and water for livestock.
