Woman arrested for leaving four children unattended after child in diapers is found wandering outside with temperatures in the high 30s
Staff report
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Natasha Shamar Slater, 33, was arrested yesterday morning and charged with four counts of child neglect after a child was found at an intersection wearing only a hoodie and a wet diaper, with temperatures in the upper 30s.
At about 8:16 a.m. on January 3, two witnesses reported finding a small child at the intersection of SW 8th Avenue and SW 10th Street, wearing only a hoodie, a soaked diaper, and no shoes, socks, hat, or gloves.
Gainesville Police Department officers also reportedly found three other children (their ages were redacted), alone in an apartment; the two older children reportedly told an officer that Slater had left them in charge of the younger children while she went to work for a meeting.
One child reportedly said that they stay at the apartment at least three days a week and sometimes stay at a hotel.
The arresting officer reported that there was a large amount of trash piled throughout the apartment, the toilets were filled with feces and appeared to be inoperable, feces were smeared on walls and on some of the beds, the refrigerator contained animal droppings and moldy food and appeared to be broken, and “numerous” insects were seen in the apartment. The officer concluded that the apartment “did not appear to be suitable for anyone to reside in, especially children,” and he wrote that a Department of Children and Families worker shared that conclusion.
Post Miranda, Slater reportedly said she had a meeting at work at 9 but had left late, around 8:55 a.m., and had arrived at work at about 9:15 a.m. However, GPD detectives reportedly reviewed surveillance video from the apartment complex that showed Slater leaving between 7 a.m. and 7:15 a.m. and showed the young child leaving the apartment around 8:16 a.m.
When asked about the video, Slater reportedly changed her story and said she had to wait for a friend to drop her own children off before leaving for work, but she continued to insist that she had not left until at least 8 a.m.
When asked about the state of the apartment, Slater reportedly said she and the children do not stay at the apartment and mostly live at a hotel, but the officer reported that she was unable to provide any receipts to verify that claim.
A sworn complaint was filed against Slater in 2019 after one of the other children was found wandering in public after Slater allegedly left the older two children in charge while she left the house. That charge was later dropped after administrative actions were deemed to be sufficient.
Slater has been charged with four counts of child neglect without great bodily harm. She has no criminal convictions; Judge Sean Brewer set bail at $100,000.
Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
That’s a damn shame! All that damn family you got!? This is crazy and so are you! Those children didn’t asked to be here! They bet not drop this second offense on you because it’s clear that you do not care for those children!
Do you know this woman? Does she have a lot of family? If so, and they aren’t helping those babies, then that just makes this situation worse
Yes I am acutely aware if this woman and her family otherwise I wouldn’t have stated my previous comment!
Help her since you running your mouth
Lol
Please save those babies from this neglectful monster!
Just go ahead and spay her. She has no business birthing more children.
Another case of adequate resources not being available to a working, single parent.
Don’t breed em if you can’t house, educate & feed em…where’s the baby daddies?
That’s your “it takes a village to raise a child” instead of the nuclear family.
What the heck is wrong with the “it takes a village?”
Here’s a thought: for most families it’s always taken a village! It’s never just been the nuclear family, unless you are loaded and say have a live in nanny. Extended family was the typical village. If one did not live near extended family, then neighbors helped neighbors. I had “adopted grandparents” growing up in a nuclear family because my grandparents lived several states away. My mom also knew that we’d been doing something wrong right when we walked in the door because at least 3 neighbors would call and tell her. Even in the ’80s, when leaving kids home alone was normal, we couldn’t do whatever we wanted because the village always ratted us out!
“It takes a village” was never about women helping other women (which has always been the case!) but about increasing the role of government in raising children. And the result has been that people just point to government programs instead of stepping in themselves.
Ok, and it’s not just women helping women. Men too. I don’t know who co-opted “it takes a village” to mean “let government raise ’em” but that’s got to be the dumbest sh$t I’ve heard in years. The nuclear family vs the village makes it sound like you have to do it all on your own, that you can’t get help from family, friends, neighbors, church, etc. That’s isolating and hard AF. I know, because I moved away from my support network, and my mom passed away. A village of gov’t bureaucrats sounds awful.
Who said she couldn’t house them feed them mind your damn business and take care and love your kids if you can’t give her a hand shut tf up
Baby daddies out there keeping it real.
Sober up
Huh?
More government welfare for this group is merely enabling more irresponsible behaviors from this culture of irresponsibility.
BUT I have taught these children & now my son & his wife teach them. What are we to do?
Bingo !
Sounds like she’s got a slumlord and not a landlord…. broken refrigerator and non-functioning toilets?
This woman left her kids to go to work, not to go have fun. Sounds like this whole family needs some serious help.
I am not going to drag her because she sounds overwhelmed. This is sad. I pray she gets the help she needs to raise her family in a healthier environment.
She needs to get her tube’s tied and quit spitting out kids
I know this young lady she works very well she works very hard and she really does love her kids this may have been a very well a very very bad mistake and I don’t think nobody needs to be on here bashing her and I hope she gets her f****** kids back and I think people need to mind that God damn business at this point because this is serious and I don’t think nobody need to be on here criticizing her because she is a very hard-working young lady I work with her she take care of older people she do 12-hour shifts at times she may be very well overwhelmed with her situation and I wish I would have known what was going on with her because I would have helped her out with her kids people need to realize people ain’t sitting on their behind getting government she’s not sitting on her ass getting government assistance she’s out getting making money I don’t know where her baby daddies are or baby daddy I don’t know don’t care but she’s working for what she need to do to take care of her kids yes she has a sorry ass man Lord and he do need to do better and when she gets out I’m going to reach out to her and I’m going to help her get her kids back because this is a sad situation
You are a good person I understand where you are coming from
Once again, dcf is a total useless failure just li,e mom. Take those welfare kids from her
Yeah, because the foster system is so great? LOL.
How do you know they DIDN’T take the kids from her…?
Hoodie this, hoodie that
On a completely separate note and not defending her actions; why is an apartment complex not keeping their toilets working or their refrigerators?? Isn’t that part of the rental agreements??? I would also be investigating the complex to see if they are keeping up with their maintenance. People are struggling and I do sympathize with her but do not condone her actions of leaving the kids by themselves.
I’ve seen her and she’s nice! Sometimes we all can’t afford childcare and jobs don’t care! It gets hard for single parents snd nobody asks to be one! Instead of bashing, the community should come together and help each other!
Amen 🙏🏾 🙏🏾 🙏🏾
Single Mom is not a coupon code.
This 💯!
Why in this country do we have these situations????
Why in this country? This should not be happening⁉️
🤡MG WTF is wrong with *some* persons? It’s not rocket science, just memorize this sequence of Life Stages:
first, Birth
then School
then Work
then Marriage
then Children
then Retire
then Death.
It’s that simple, no degrees needed.
Together, we can Starve Lawyers🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸MAGA
Say no to ACLUSPLCDNC 👺🤡👿👹💩
FYI the apt. complex has individually owned condos at Campus Walk, where criminals and SSI mental cases also live. That child is lucky it was discovered by good citizens.
The toilets may be broken because the absentee landlord doesn’t know how many kids live there flushing baby wipes, other unflushables down the toilet.
It’s time to take her government money makers away since she’s unfit to take care of them.
Wrong she don’t get government assistance but she got a job mind your f****** business shut the f******
Why have all these children in the first place? Oh, yeah, welfare per head, no matter the damage to these poor children and society that you wreak. Poor little guys, their future is Raiford.
Y’all a****** she don’t get welfare stupid mother f***** she got a job
Slater worked for the department of corrections at the Santa Fe bridges center for work release inmates and I can honestly say that she wore 250 dollar jordans and should of used that towards the children and herself because she smelled terrible. She shouldn’t be in charge of that many kids cause she obviously can’t take care of them . That’s a disgusting situation.
