Woman arrested for leaving small children alone for hours while she was at work

Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Jazmine Marie Everett, 24, was arrested yesterday after allegedly leaving her 3-year-old and 11-month-old home alone for five hours while she was at work.

At about 1:20 p.m. on November 26, a Department of Children and Families (DCF) investigator arrived at Everett’s apartment to conduct a follow-up visit and reportedly heard the 3-year-old crying from outside the apartment. The investigator phoned Everett and learned that she was at work at Target, so she called the police.

A Gainesville Police Department officer forced entry into the apartment and reportedly found both children inside alone, without food; the apartment was reportedly “unsanitary, hazardous and not stable for living conditions.” The 11-month-old’s diaper was soiled, and the DCF investigator reportedly told the officer that the diaper appeared to have been on the infant “for an extended period of time.”

Everett arrived at about 2 p.m., and post Miranda, she reportedly said she had called an upstairs neighbor and asked her to watch the children before she left for work; she admitted leaving the children alone and locking the door when she left for work at 9 a.m. and said her shift was scheduled to end at 6 p.m. She reportedly said she left two bottles of formula inside the infant’s playpen, but the officer reported that there were no bottles within reach of the infant and no formula was found in the apartment. Everett reportedly admitted that the infant had not eaten since she left that morning.

The upstairs neighbor reportedly said Everett had asked her sister to ask the neighbor if she could watch the children, but Everett was told she would not be able to do that. The neighbor said she had no idea the children were alone in the apartment. She also reportedly said that Everett had called her on her way back to the apartment and asked her to say she had been watching the children so Everett would not get in trouble.

Everett reportedly took a Lyft from work to the apartment, and the Lyft driver reportedly said Everett had sent her a message as soon as she arrived that said, “Can you hurry, but not hurry as the police are at my house because my kids are alone.” The driver said she overheard Everett on a phone conversation in which she was asking someone to cover for her and say they had been watching the children; the driver said Everett said on the phone that she has left her children alone before but has never been caught. She said Everett ended the call by saying, “Just tell them that you had to run upstairs to get diaper rash cream and had to lock the door so the children would not get out.”

The officer noted that a similar incident was reported earlier this year when the children were left home alone; at that time, their father, Brandon Alexander Reynolds, was arrested. In September, he entered a plea of nolo contendere to one count of child neglect, with the second charge dropped, and Judge James Colaw sentenced him to two years of probation and withheld adjudication of guilt. Special conditions of Reynolds’s probation include completing DCF’s case plan, completing a parenting class, and not leaving minor children unattended for any period of time.

Everett has been charged with two counts of child neglect without causing great bodily harm. She has one misdemeanor conviction for driving without a valid license; she has been released from the Alachua County Jail.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

  • These people despise their children and only use them as tax credits for extra government gimme bucks. How despicable.

    • By leaving the children with no supervision was awful and I feel sorry for them. The fact that she is working and using Lyft for transportation raises questions. Tell us more about the “gimme bucks”. This young single mother is in need of help. Maybe a good social worker and birth control? Oh, but Captain Ron Desantis says no.

      • The Health Department has been giving out free birth control for years, and Alachua County/Gainesville has social workers. I think the city provides free bus passes and I’d be willing to bet she’s a recipient of SNAP and/or WIC benefits as well. It would be interesting to know what cellphone and model she has though.

There’s probably not as many social workers as there are liberal hypocrites.

        • MAGA working poor will suffer, too. So-called conservatives will enjoy similar conditions as Republicans live large. Only difference is you will thank them for it.

Remember, you voted for it. You will get it.

          Enjoy! 🙂

          • I don’t recall the story stating her political leanings but nice try…however feeble it was.
I pointed out the liberal hypocrisy. You know, like the part about the seas are rising, the sky is falling and then go buy a multi-million dollar property on the coast. Maybe you can offer her a job or a babysitter?
Or just be what I’ve already stated – a liberal hypocrite.

          • I didn’t vote for idiots having children and abandoning infants in my home, but you sound about as rational as the average Demonrat.

      • As an adult who chose not to have children, I’ve never heard of anyone saying no to birth control. No one told me or my husband we can’t use condoms.

We don’t know this young lady’s story but ,for many, there is a series of poor choices that leads to living this way and it has nothing to do with anyone else saying no to birth control. Abortion is not birth control, it is medical care for very specific circumstances which does not include doing whatever the heck you want with whoever the heck you want.

        • For sure DeSantis did NOT get her pregnant.

Not so sure about Trump and Gaetz and the rest of the Republicans who cannot keep their pants zipped.

  • I do not know this person’s history, but I can say at least she is working. So, what if she is on SNAP, she is working and it is there to help with food, not supply the full amount of food. So, what if she receives WIC, it is there to help with the kids needed nutrition. As for her leaving the children at home alone, definitely neglect, but looking at it in their perspective that she felt she had no other option because she needed to provide for her kids and herself I feel bad. What this tells me is that the system is failing. When I say this I know that if she had kids under the age of 6, SNAP will allow her to not have to do the work program, therefore she would have the option of staying home. She felt she needed to work to provide. Though one can apply for daycare help and daycares are so expensive now it’s crazy. We never know one’s circumstances if we have never been in their shoes. Still there is no excuse for leaving the babies by themselves. DCF should have provided services to aid in the care of the children, and yes, they do that, they will say it is for security of the children. And the fact that this happened before with the father is sad, that is why DCF should have had them in the services. This is sad all the way around.

    • System isn’t failing. People are. She’s had 2 children before the age of 24, and although she may be doing the best she can with whatever resources she has, she apparently is still a single mom, with 2 children and may be working part-time at the very least.
Childcare is expensive, maybe that should be on the sides of buses instead of attorney ads.

  • This was an act of desperation. If you don’t have family to step in, childcare in unimaginably expensive. This Mother does not need jail, she needs access to inexpensive childcare.

    • Agreed, she doesn’t need jail.

Maybe some of those protestors who frequent City Hall can assist with childcare seeing as how they have so much free time on their hands.

      • You are clueless about who those protestors are. They might be happily living off retirement or Social Security while they can before your beloved fascist GOP dismantles that and orders them to bag groceries at Publix like good little poors.

        • You’re just clueless. The majority of those I’ve seen are crying about having to pay back the student loans they signed for or demanding Israel stop killing terrorists.
May want to get out of that bubble your parents are renting for you.

    • Perhaps the impregnators can be held responsible to pay child support? I know…..wishful thinking…..it’s you & me who get to foot the bill.

  • Can you put yourself in her shoes?

She was doing the best should could given the circumstances she’s in…

    The kids are ok.

    Deadbeat dad…

    She’s got a hard life.

Probably no family and is very poor.

    Happy Thanksgiving 🦃…

We got a lot to be thankful for.

    • Yes we do……especially thank God for DJT! We need him to straighten out this leftist mess courtesy of the Dems.

      • Sure Dude, that will happen. What’s the plan he claims he got a “mandate” for – actually most Americans didn’t vote for him – 49.6% and declining, he lost House seats, but did gain Senate seats, most that would have flipped even if Harris won – and is overreacting already. No doubt Americans will feel really good about the world’s richest man dictating what services they don’t need anymore, and the inflation tariffs and mass deportations will bring, though the latter is as likely to happen as building the wall and Mexico paying for it.

  • Simple life lesson:

    Birth first in order
    School next
    Work next
    Marriage next
    Offspring next
    Retirement next
    Death last

It’s not rocket science, but there’s still adoption for unplanned offspring you cannot raise humanely, despite any help with others.

    WTH?

    Child support?

This woman – by all available evidence – was struggling with serious responsibilities and not doing that well with them. But Ozzie and Harriet fantasies aside, many of the world’s children were and are born into tough to risky circumstances, and if they weren’t our species would not have made it. There will be many more with Draconian anti-abortion laws like Florida has, despite 57% of voters wanting it axed.

Hopefully – and probably – this woman will get some help. As an orthodox Jew I once knew said, they believe in the holiness of each newborn – it might be the Messiah. Not into the religious aspect of that, but I like the spirit.

  • wait a few more years when all these 12 – 15 year old girls that Are FORCED TO GIVE BIRTH , start flushing them down and chucking them in the woods , Welcome to Donald’s america .

    • Yes I by golly did vote for Trump and I’d vote for him again. All these failings you people keep referring to are under Biden’s watch, not Trumps. You seem to forget that wee fact.

  • Sad, dangerous, poor judgement, mistake…Does this little family have no relatives, friends, or church family?

  • And what resources/programs are actually available to her that could have prevented this situation?

We (society) really need to be able to help a single mother who is actually trying to hold down a job.
