Woman charged with leaving five-year-old twins alone to go to a party

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Shanderia Lakea Colvin, 25, was arrested early this morning and charged with child neglect after her five-year-old son reportedly called 911 to report that he and his brother had been left alone while Colvin “went to get liquor and go to a party.”
At about 11:55. p.m. on April 30, a 911 call was received from a five-year-old boy who reportedly said he was with his twin brother and that their mother had dropped them off at someone else’s house while she went to get liquor and go to a party.
A call-taker stayed on the phone with the child while Gainesville Police Department officers searched for the children, finally locating them at 1:40 a.m. in an apartment at Grove at Sweetwater Preserve. Officers entered the unlocked apartment and found the two children alone. The resident later reportedly told an officer that the door was unlocked because she had lost the key.
An officer contacted Colvin through the child’s phone.
Post Miranda, Colvin originally said she had left her children with a sibling and that her sibling had confirmed she was watching the children. However, after her sibling was taken into custody, Colvin reportedly recanted and admitted she had dropped her children off at the apartment and left them without supervision.
Colvin has been charged with child neglect without great bodily harm. She has one misdemeanor conviction for driving without a valid license. In December 2022, a sworn complaint was filed against her for allegedly stealing $2,000 in children’s clothes; in February 2023, a sworn complaint was filed against her for allegedly spraying mace on a victim; and in June 2023, a sworn complaint was filed against her for hitting a woman over the head with a glass bottle, causing a concussion. All of the charges were later dropped.
Judge Susan Miller-Jones set bail at $20,000.

The boy who called 911 must have a sensible head on his shoulders for someone that age. Unfortunately it sounds like his family environment won’t be conducive to making the most of it as he grows older.
Given recent happenings in Gainesville, can’t help but wonder if he’ll get the opportunity to grow older.

There are plenty of people willing to adopt unwanted childern. Abortion after 6 weeks is murder.
Oh please. With the ready availability of birth control, it is easier to NOT get pregnant in the first place than getting “unpregnant” after the fact. Using abortion as a form of birth control is wrong and stupid.
You’re one of those? Hate to break the news to you but more children are aborted because of a “bad choice” than a pregnancy caused by a rape. Contraceptives are readily available and you can always choose to keep your feet on the ground.
Thanks for playing; if you’ve ever aborted a child, that’s more than he or she was able to do. They lost more than a right, they lost their life.

Don’t get me wrong, this woman shouldn’t be excused or have custody of her children ever again.
But if you’re paying attention, you’ll see that child neglect and abuse happens in all cultures and is perpetrated by people of all races, ethnic backgrounds and religion, and at all economic levels.
I feel so bad for these babies. I hope DCF keeps a close eye on this girl. Out at 1:40 am on a freakin Tuesday night. She obviously cares more about herself than her children. Lashes, brows, tats and that hair doesn’t come cheap.
She should lose the kids, and the child tax credit. Narcissist surtax instead.
