Woman hit and killed by two vehicles while walking in the roadway

Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – A 39-year-old woman was killed on Sunday after two vehicles hit her while she was walking in the roadway.

According to a Gainesville Police Department spokesman, at about 9:10 p.m. on October 12, the woman was walking in the roadway in the 3400 block of NW 16th Avenue when a Dodge Challenger, traveling eastbound, struck her. She was then hit again by a Toyota Tacoma pickup truck and was pronounced deceased at the scene of the accident.

  • Let us know when there’s info on the circumstances. I used to live there and happened to drive past the scene when the vagrant begging in the middle of the road was killed a few years ago.

  • The speed limit is 35-40 through that intersection. Although there is no information here on how/why this occurred, the fact that TWO vehicles hit a human being and killed her even if she was walking in the road, seems like it should have been preventable. Sad and tragic for everyone involved. 🙏

    • It’s basic physics, if a car (weighing in around 4000 lbs) and traveling 35 to 40 MPH hits a person (let’s say between 100 and 250 lbs.) they will not just fall over, they will be thrown for sure. I agree it is sad, and I also agree the car was probably going way over 35 mph, but no matter if it was the speed limit or not, they will go flying and most likely into the opposite lane where they will be hit once again.

    • Definitely preventable… Someone obviously did something wrong/unsafe here, but, as you say, there is no information here on how/why this occurred.
The crash report should become public record in about 60 days. This is such a tragedy for the deceased and for the drivers. It would be good if there is anything helpful that can be learned from what happened, that might help prevent this from happening again, if it is shared with the public.

  • Too many pedestrians and cyclists wear dark clothing at night. If pertinent or not. It’s gonna be worse when Fest goers are in town, but at least downtown has good street lighting.

  • It is too bad that we only get part of the story when these crashes occur. Who- A 39 year old woman died. Marsy’s Law prevents the victim’s name being released. I can see not releasing the drivers’ names if they were not charged in this terrible crash. What-The woman, a pedestrian who was “walking in the roadway” was hit by 2 vehicles (a Dodge Challenger, and then a Toyota Tacoma,) and killed. Lots of “what” is missing. Was she really walking in the roadway? Was she in a crosswalk? in the bike lane? Facing traffic/walking against traffic? Was the speed of the vehicles considered to be possibly excessive? Where-NW 34th St. and NW 16th Ave. (Readers filled in the details that there ARE sidewalks and crosswalks at this location/intersection.) When- Sunday, 9:10 pm. After dark. Why? This will require investigation and analysis, and we the readers will almost certainly never learn the official results. That’s how it goes… Lots of conjecture and speculation, every time something like this happens. (A bike rider was killed on NE 39th Ave. after being hit by a pick-up truck a few weeks ago. Same thing. No real answers. Nothing the public can learn from what actually happened. The truth is not shared by our governing authorities. Even our hard working journalist cannot find out the answers… The take home, from the limited info we have could be summed up perhaps that pedestrians should always use a sidewalk when available, walk facing traffic if there is no sidewalk, wear hi-vis clothing and carry a light at night, don’t assume that drivers will stop, even if you have a WALK signal at a crosswalk. Pay attention to your surroundings. Situational awareness is crucial! You can be right and still end up dead. Drivers, don’t drive with excessive speed, and pay attention to the road. Expect the unexpected with kids, cyclists and pedestrians. The seconds you save racing around focused on your own things aren’t worth a lifetime of knowing that you killed or injured someone.
