Woman who just got out of prison arrested for stealing from Walmart

BY JENNIFER CABRERA

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Carise Shantae Duncan, 32, was arrested yesterday morning and charged with petit theft (3rd or subsequent offense) and resisting merchant detainment after allegedly taking $209.11 in items from Walmart.

Duncan allegedly took a backpack into the Butler Plaza Walmart and placed items in it, then walked out without paying. The store’s loss prevention officer saw Duncan placing items in the backpack and called for police assistance.

A Gainesville Police Department (GPD) officer was standing by the exit when the loss prevention officer tried to stop Duncan, but Duncan allegedly refused to stop, telling the loss prevention officer that she was a minor and he could not touch her.

Duncan then allegedly pushed past the loss prevention officer to get to the second set of exit doors. The GPD officer approached her as she came out of the second set of doors and told her to stop; she allegedly refused at first but then stopped.

Post Miranda, Duncan reportedly said she stole the items because she just got out of prison and has no money.

Duncan was convicted in August 2021 of 18 felonies and eight misdemeanors, mostly grand theft auto, petit theft, burglary, and illegal possession of debit/credit cards; she served one year and seven months in prison and was released on January 2. Bail information is unavailable on weekends.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

  • Maybe she could attend the GPD mini academy getting paid $15 hour…. She would get police training, and the city would not look at her criminal background until the end of the hiring process… heck she even has the police ride along experience checked off!

  • I guess prisons are hosting CRT reparations classes now? Their prison schools revised remedial ed. after ACLU-BLM-SPLC lawyers took over, maybe? “Paying off law skool loans more important now”

  • “Loss prevention officer” Must be an exciting job at Walmart with all the miscreants Gville has to offer?

  • Put her on a work farm growing vegetables for the prison for 5 years.
Then she’ll know how to garden.

    • Good idea…she’ll learn a livelihood instead of being a thief and won’t be a burden on society..

  • Gainesville quickly becoming like other liberal run communities. Wouldn’t be surprised if city leadership introduced local legislation to prevent businesses and LEOs from interfering with anyone stealing within the city limits up to a predetermined monetary value. Some jurisdictions in the western US have done it, bound to happen in Gainesville – at least until Governor DeSantis hears about it.

  • “convicted in August 2021 of 18 felonies and eight misdemeanors, mostly grand theft auto, petit theft, burglary, and illegal possession of debit/credit cards; she served one year and seven months in prison”

18 felonies and received 19 months. Does anyone else see a problem with this?
