Yard trash pickup delayed due to Hurricane Debby
Press release from Alachua County
ALACHUA COUNTY, Fla. – Cleanup from Hurricane Debby continues throughout the county. The County and our hauler, GFL, are working diligently to collect the large volume of yard trash created by the storm in a timely manner. It is our hope to be caught up by Sept. 1, 2024. Until that time, residents should not expect their yard trash to be collected on its regular schedule.
Please remember that any yard trash placed out for collection needs to comply with the regular specifications for yard trash placed curbside. GFL will not collect any material outside of those specifications.
Yard trash includes leaves, grass clippings, tree and shrub trimmings, and small tree limbs. It does not include boards, fencing, landscape timbers, lumber, dirt, rocks, brick or concrete.
The regular specifications for yard trash placed curbside are:
- No item longer than 5 feet in length
- No item wider than 8 inches in diameter
- No item heavier than 40 pounds
- All loose material must be placed in a paper yard waste bag or reusable container
Thank you for your patience as we do our best to be caught up in the next few weeks.
Remember good old days when our previously contracted garbage collection company would catch up in a week or so?
Remember when the garbage and recycle were still picked up while yard waste was still being worked on?
The County Commission left those of us who live in rural parts of the county out in the cold. We have to subscribe directly with GFL. While we have a scheduled pick up day, GFL is very inconsistent in their pickup. Because of Debby, our regular garbage was not picked up last. My recycle garbage was scattered all over the side of the road after four days. Commissioners Alfred and Prizza should be voted out. County government should provide services to all citizens without consideration for which part of the county in which we live.
Whenever GFL says the trash pickup is delayed a day and will be picked up the next day I have to laugh. I think our Friday trash has been picked up on a Saturday only once in years.
maybe they can swing by city hall and throw out that trash.
I didn’t like GFL at first, but I have to admit using their service is way more exciting than the old service.
The old service would just pick up your trash and recycling on your scheduled day, week in and out, with very few exceptions. Boring.
With GFL, every pickup day is a gamble. When I get home from work, will my trash still be there? Did they randomly skip picking up recycling on my street? Or my favorite of all, will my garbage can and recycle bins be thrown haphazardly right into the street, creating an obstacle course for my neighbors? You never know what to expect.
I bet if everyone starts burning the storm trash they might kick themselves in gear.
