‘Yes! We’re social workers!’

  • Thanks, Jake! This is a great opportunity to share that, in the FY26 budget alone, we have allocated $111 million for transportation projects and $244 million for public safety projects.

This includes increased funding for the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office, jail operations, Fire Rescue services, Combined Communications, and vital jail diversion programs. The Sheriff’s Office and Fire Rescue account for over 25% of the county’s budget.

    • Is that from increased tax revenues or tax savings that were reallocated for efficiency?

Maybe special assessments or the taxes stupid people decided to impose on themselves?

    • I’m sure this investment in public safety includes the cost of unlimited phone calls for the jail. Are the gangs still controlling access to the phones over there?

Its also safe to say the “vital jail diversion programs” include the ‘justice involved non-violent’ population the Commission and its court services consultants advocate releasing into the community to lower jail headcount. How unfortunate that its so easy to ignore the increased cost of living to innocent people who have to live and work in the parts of the county infested with low level property crime the Commission finds acceptable. And these “programs” must also include the actually violent recidivists who get released pre-trial to commit new crimes or terrorize their victims into dropping charges.

  • Wasn’t the county just told about the possible $250,000 homestead exemption? Better prepare.
