18-year-old on probation charged with attempted homicide for March 26 shooting

BY JENNIFER CABRERA

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Emanuel Leon Baker III, 18, was arrested last night and charged with attempted murder after allegedly shooting a man at 1024 W. University Avenue on March 26. Baker is on probation after accepting a plea deal for cashing fraudulent checks in November 2022 and will also be charged with violation of probation.

Baker is accused of shooting the victim in the chest with a .45 caliber handgun at about 3 a.m. on March 26; according to the arrest affidavit, the victim remains in serious condition.

Surveillance video from the Chevron gas station reportedly captured the entire incident; a juvenile who was with Baker reportedly walked up to the victim in a crowd and forcefully bumped him, then threw his Checkers cup at the victim. As the victim staggered backward and the crowd scattered, Baker allegedly pulled a handgun from his waistband and shot the victim. Baker and the juvenile then fled north on NW 11th Street.

Gainesville Police Department officers made contact with the two teens as they fled toward Baker’s vehicle and reportedly found a 9mm handgun in the juvenile’s pants. A 9mm handgun was also reportedly found in the victim’s waistband.

Both teens reportedly denied shooting the victim. A gunshot residue test was negative for the juvenile but positive for Baker.

After Baker’s vehicle was towed from the parking lot, officers reportedly recanvassed the parking lot and found a .45 caliber handgun on the ground where the vehicle had been parked.

The surveillance video reportedly showed that the shooter had reflective writing down the left arm of his hoodie, and the affidavit states that nobody else in the crowd had that distinctive reflective marking. Baker was reportedly wearing a hoodie with “New Balance” written down the left arm when officers made contact with him. Surveillance video from the nearby Checkers, just before the shooting, also reportedly showed Baker wearing the same hoodie and repeatedly reaching toward his waistband.

Post Miranda, Baker reportedly said he heard the gunshot and ran because he was scared. He also reportedly said the gunshot residue was from shooting an AR-15 with his stepfather earlier in the day.

Post Miranda, the juvenile reportedly said he and Baker had an argument with the victim earlier in the evening when they were downtown.

Baker was arrested in November 2022 for cashing fraudulent checks and pushing a clerk who became suspicious when they returned to try to cash more checks at the same location. On February 14, Baker entered a plea of nolo contendere to two counts of cashing a fraudulent check, engaging in a scheme to defraud, and simple battery in exchange for 3 years of probation and restitution of $5,135.19; adjudication of guilt was withheld as part of the deal.

Judge Susan Miller-Jones set bail for the homicide charge at $1,000,000, the amount recommended in the arrest warrant signed by Judge David Kreider.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

  • Referencing back to a recent meeting within the county…a couple of School Board members need to rethink their “cause” of the discrepancies between east and west side schools and the inappropriate identification of “wild west Newberry and Archer.”

  • The real problem is no fathers. These cowards have no problems pumping out babies but won’t be man enough to raise their kids. Now we as a society have to collectively pay for this “kid” for the next 25 years.

    • So much for LBJ’s Great Experiment with Society. It was the beginning of the “free stuff” campaign embraced by progressives and the continued cause of “It’s not what I can do for my country but what my country should do for me.”

    • If I had to guess, I suspect his father is Emanuel Baker, the county worker who was paralyzed while on the job when either a tree or a telephone pole landed on him. I remember the case because Chris Chesnut screwed him over by making him sign some altered fee contracts, or something along those lines. Chesnut lost his bar license as a result. Terrible tragedy for that family. I think the elder Emanuel was actually trying to provide for and raise his kids before that accident.

    • Quick sexual gratification, no regard for the outcome, knowing that the Government will take care of you, tax credit, free housing, food stamps, free phones. But it will never be enough! Look at the reparations mess in California.
Honorable black men, when I was growing up, would beat the crap out of an unruly child like this punk.

    • He has a good step father nd his dad cares about him don’t say what u don’t kno

  • 18 years old !!!! A Thug at 18. At least Miller gave a decent bail amount.

  • March 26 was a weekly “Peaceful Sunday” that continues aggravating and tying up GPD officers.

    • Such shame of u to comment on somebody else’s issue nobody deserves death I’ll be praying for your mind he will be home soon everybody just tryna make him look like ah monster

  • He’ll have something to rap about in prison for the next 20-30 years while he cries about how wrong and fuc*ed up the system is. with that being said, easter sunday is right around the corner. I’m sure I’ll wake up and read about somebody else getting shot or losing their life. Usually happens anytime people of color congregate in numbers. They can’t even get along on MLK Day

    • 20-30 years 😂 he coming home in the initial report it’s self defense if they drop his vop he coming home he is a caring nd loving person god got him so don’t worry bout his situation when yo life probably ain’t fully stable everybody got problems trails nd tribulations this just a lesson before his blessings

  • Omg wake up ppl, these judges given out more time than you have lived . Just sad, you trying to make a name for yourself, and your given birth name is gonna be Numbers. Wake up,

    • Omg, that makes no sense. I’m sure they still teach English in night school—-Lock up this menace to society so he doesn’t make a name for himself & kill someone else.

      • He not a menace if u u ever got in dis situation u wouldn’t want nobody labeling u in da first police report it was clearly self defense the media is trynna paint a evil picture of him when he is a loving nd goffy person but of all a best friend a person can wish for I hope u find something good to do instead of criticizing people on this earth

  • Aww jeez, if only they coulda been dribbling a basketball at 3 a.m., aww jeez…🏀 🔫

  • Put a 10 foot fence topped with concertina wire around the hood and throw some extra ammo over for them to cull their herd. EMT services should be suspended. Less medical and legal expense for the taxpayers to deal with.

    • He ain’t no thug it’s self defense the media trynna paint him as a monster but I kno my brother he koming home soon so nobody can’t say nothing that don’t make him a free main cause on the initial police report it’s clearly self defense he was protecting him nd his friend it was either that or him nd his friend would’ve got shot

      • Looks like someone didn’t pay attention in class. Take your ebonics spelling ass on somewhere. I’m tired of hearing all these criminals and how good of people they “so called” are. If he was such a good person he wouldn’t be out carrying a firearm, he wouldn’t be out shooting people and he wouldn’t put himself in that situation nor would he be on probation for cashing fraudulent checks. next you’ll tell us he was studying to be a pastor right?

  • 14 out of 20 Mug Shots are non-Whites.
    FBI Stats:
Blacks commit 72% of all crime in the country.
Blacks commit 52% of all murders in the country.
Blacks are the largest segment of the prison population at 34%.

    • Yah, because of racial profiling, right? NOT! Or, maybe the kids of all other races and ethnicities are out there shooting each other up all the time and law enforcement is just overlooking it (or so some would have you believe!)
The way our sheriff is running things, you’d think he is trying to dismantle the whole department. Maybe it is deliberate, to help prevent all those arrests. SMH. Pray for us all!

  • This comment thread is hilarious. This kid made his choice. And now he will have plenty of time to think about the senseless act that committed. You all enjoy your life, because he doesn’t.
