Man arrested for kidnapping, sexual assault of a minor

Updated on October 9, 2024, with disposition of the case.

Staff report

Travis Deshawn Lewis, 34, was arrested this morning on charges of kidnapping and sexual assault on a person between 12 and 18 years of age.

Few details are available about the case because it is still an active investigation, but a sworn complaint was filed at around 3:00 a.m. on November 14 about an incident that had just occurred at Bellamay Grand Apartments, 2625 SW 75th St., and a warrant was issued on November 24. Lewis’ address is the same as the incident location.

Court records show that the State Attorney’s Office requested $100,000 bail on each charge, for a total of $200,000, but Judge James Colaw changed it to $500,000 on each charge, for a total of $1 million.

Update: On September 6, 2022, the kidnapping charge was dropped, and Lewis was formally charged with sexual battery on a person between the ages of 12 and 18; the document alleged that Lewis “acted as a principal to help or facilitate” sexual battery by a different defendant. On August 11, 2023, a charge of aggravated assault with intent to commit a felony was added, alleging that Lewis threatened the juvenile. Lewis entered a plea of nolo contendere to aggravated assault with intent to commit a felony, and the sexual battery charge was dropped. Lewis was sentenced to one year in jail with credit for one year served, followed by 60 months of probation and a promise to testify truthfully in the other defendant’s case. Adjudication of guilt was withheld.

    • Uh, duh, the same judge who let the wreck causing gun guy out on low bail. But try again, and thanks for playing.

      • Thanks for enlightening us. Maybe his dropped and grew a little after the public outcry over the prior incident.

In any case, the thug didn’t get his out of jail card for free.
