Man arrested for shooting at vehicle after fatal November shooting on Newberry Road

Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Lavardrick Danquez Harrell, 23, was arrested yesterday and charged with shooting into a vehicle for allegedly shooting at a woman who arrived with the man suspected of firing the fatal shots in the November 24 homicide on Newberry Road.

At about 2:08 p.m. on November 24, Gainesville Police Department officers responded to a call about a shooting at 4010 Newberry Road. The victim was reportedly transported to the hospital by Harrell, his brother, and he succumbed to his injuries.

Surveillance video reportedly showed Harrell and his brother (the homicide victim) arriving at JG’s Barber Lounge at 1:49 p.m. by car and going inside the building. At 1:54 p.m., Harrell moved the car to a different parking space. At 2:05 p.m., the homicide suspect arrived, parked, and got out of his car. At 2:06 p.m., Harrell moved the car again; about 30 seconds later, he walked over to his brother and spoke with him briefly, then they both walked to the parking lot. 30 seconds after that, the homicide suspect walked out of the barbershop and headed north along the sidewalk. Six seconds later, Harrell’s brother is seen walking toward the sidewalk, adjusting his pants, while Harrell drives slowly behind him.

At 2:08, gunshots are heard off-camera, and the homicide suspect is seen running through the parking lot, then westbound on Newberry Road. A few seconds later, Harrell is seen running behind the homicide suspect but appears to lose sight of him; Harrell appears to be holding a firearm.

About 30 seconds later, a woman who was in the homicide suspect’s car moves into the driver seat of his car and drives toward the exit of the parking lot; the report states that Harrell can be seen shooting at the car five times, hitting the car once.

Officers made contact with the woman later that afternoon, and she reportedly said she had arrived with the homicide suspect and decided after hearing the gunshots to drive away from the area in an attempt to find him. She said she heard more gunshots while driving away, and the car was hit.

One fragmented projectile was reportedly found on the rear passenger floor of the car, and the rear driver’s side tire was completely flat.

Five shell casings were reportedly found in the area where Harrell was standing; Harrell’s car was impounded, and after a search warrant was obtained, a gun was reportedly found in the driver’s seat.

Harrell has been charged with shooting into a vehicle. He has juvenile convictions between 2011 and 2017 but no adult criminal history. Judge Phillip Pena set bail at $100,000 on Harrell’s arrest warrant, and Judge Susan Miller-Jones affirmed that bail at Harrell’s first appearance this morning.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

  • No bond.. especially on violent crimes.. not that hard.. more to do with Tallahassee vs local government.. so chill on the liberal this.. liberal that.. focus your energy on the right people.. but that never stopped yall before

  • How progressive and inclusive! No wonder he’s stayed here since his 2011 juvenile justice formative years 🤡👹🍦🍦🍦🥺

  • Gangland is gangland. It isn’t as bad as Ocala but we always getting there. It sounds like the Harrell brothers were going to have a armed confrontation with the alleged homicide suspect and lost. Either way it can be a win win for Alachua County. Let kill each other off and we will put the winner in prison for life

  • I’d like to know why he’s not being charged as an accessory to murder? Quit playing games with these thug punks and make examples out of them. You want to do the crime be prepared to do the time!

  • Looks like it didn’t go how the brothers planned….sucks! For every bada$$ there’s a baddera$$.

  • Another case of so called cultural ‘disrespect’? None of these cretins deserve ANY respect.

  • I still think the inmates needed better firearm training while in jail. To many times you read about firing and not hitting their target. Shoot 5 times and only hit car once. They have computers that could help them train while in jail. No need for innocent folks to get shot.

  • OUR WORLD, WOW CLEARLY HAS NO RESPECT OR THEIR FAMILY AND THEIR TIME OF MOURNING, VAR LOST HIS BROTHER AND HIS MOTHER LOST HER OLDEST SON. SO MANY PEOPLE WANT TO PLAY JUDGE, JURY, ATTORNEY AND PUBLIC PRETENDER. HE IS A THUG CAUSE HE SHOT A GUN, HE SHOT AFTER SOMEONE FOR KILLING HIS BROTHER, HE IS A THUG CAUSE HIS BROTHER GOT KILLED. SO MANY WAS THERE AND JUST KNOW WHAT HAPPENED WHY NONE OF YOU ALL HELPED? SOMETHINGS BETTER LEFT UNSAID. AND JUST LIKE THIS HAPPENED TO THEM IT CAN EASILY HAPPEN TO YOU ALL OR YOUR CHILD. WE ALL NEED TO CONTINUE TO PRAY FOR OUR YOUTH/YOUNG ADULTS, PRAY FOR OUR CITY AND ALL YOU GOD FEARING CHRISTINS, PRAY AND ASK GOD TO FORGIVING YOU FOR JUDGING OTHERS.

    • You are part of the problem. Yes, he is a “Thug”. It’s not white folks killing black folks. It’s Thug on Thug. Until this sub human culture stops it will continue. I am willing to ask where is the father. Mothers are concerned about themselves. Of course being critical of this sub human culture is seen as racist. It didn’t just start yesterday. This culture with its music degrading woman, vulgar dancing, no father figure. It being acceptable to have children out if wedlock are only a start of some of things that need to change. Everyone sees the problems but are afraid to address them. Keep praying, the killing will continue.

      • BINGO!!!! This is TRUTH. The truth will set you free….unless of course you reject it wanting to remain on the democratic subsidized ‘plantation’?

    • You are honoring a thug who got shot, tape reveals that Joc White went after the guy to confront him. Probably armed. His brother was the backup. Joc White has a extensive criminal history in Alachua County that ranges from cruelty towards childern and shooting guns into occuppied dwellings, beyond being a constant thorn in the side if law enforcement with his driving habits. This was nothing more than thugs shooting at thugs over something as stupid as drugs, name calling, or women, or whatever petty things thugs fight over. As I said before the situation has saved taxpayers, and law enforcement a lot of money and time. Losers are gone, winner goes to prison. Why should society be upset about a wannabe gangsters demise when the thugs dont care who they shoot or they can’t live among normal people without being violent? Let’s not forget that Harrell fired multiple rounds at a vehicle only hitting it one with missed rounds flying around with unknown innocent people’s names on them. Again who gives a damn about this thug going to prison when he shoots up the area with out regards for human life and safety. Good riddens to these unlawful people.

  • Meanwhile the system is worried about women rights on abortion. They need to focus on gun violence and laws

  • I think you’re all wrong. Wether, They went after that guy or not he came there with motive to, pay attention the words say he didn’t go into the barbershop. He walked up the street. Thing is none of them were up to anything good. However, A young man’s life was taken. So show some respect for his family at least they are innocent, there was absolutely nothing in the article stating his family was involved. Also, why the hell is the brother being arrested before the murder suspect? Wether he shot or not the murderer should be the prime target. Ask yourself where are all these guns coming from? After all you have to register and get permission to get one? 🤔 Think? They not getting on the street by themselves, that who you go after the ones putting them on the street, that’s how you stop gun play, you get all parties involved.
