Man on probation charged with stealing car after crash

Staff report

ARCHER, Fla. – Dajuan Lee Myhand, 22, of Micanopy, was arrested yesterday after deputies responding to a crash in Archer determined that he had stolen the crashed vehicle.

At about 11:43 a.m. on April 28, Alachua County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a crash in the 6700 block of SW 170th Street in Archer and learned that the crashed vehicle, a 2017 Kia Niro, had been reported stolen earlier that morning. The owner of the car reportedly said that the vehicle had been parked in her driveway in Micanopy, and nobody had permission to drive it; she said the key fob for the vehicle had been left in the glove box because the car did not work properly and had to be jump-started.

Post Miranda, Myhand reportedly said he got the car from an acquaintance, but he was unable to provide any contact information for the acquaintance; he said he’d had drinks with the man the previous night at a bar in downtown Gainesville. Myhand reportedly said at different times that he had met the man three years ago and a couple of months ago.

Myhand reportedly provided a timeline of events in which he and the man had driven to the Lochloosa area from the bar at about 3 a.m., and he did not leave that area until about 9 a.m. He said the man gave him permission to drive the Kia, and he started it with the key. However, the Kia was reportedly picked up by traffic cameras at 4:04 a.m., 5:46 a.m., and 6:06 a.m., contradicting his story.

The officer noted that the victim’s home is within walking distance of the address on Myhand’s driver’s license, and Myhand reportedly had a pair of cold-weather black gloves that he said he planned to use to fix a vehicle.

Myhand, who is designated as a violent felony offender of special concern, has been charged with grand theft of a motor vehicle. He has nine felony convictions (one violent) and is on probation following his 2023 release from prison after serving a 15-month sentence for armed burglary and eight counts of grand theft of a firearm. He also has an active warrant out of Marion County for grand theft of a vehicle, burglary, and tampering with evidence. Judge Meshon Rawls set bail at $50,000.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law

    • There are times when insurance will not pay if a vehicle is stolen.
Too bad the courts won’t allow for indentured servitude until the loss is reclaimed. If it were my vehicle, I would want him mowing my 10 acres this summer with a push mower and a sling blade.

      • But this type of guy would make a claim to the insurance company for his injuries and stupidity.

  • WhyTF set any bail at all? Quote “ Myhand, who is designated as a violent felony offender of special concern, has been charged with grand theft of a motor vehicle. If we can’t replace scummy judges and public lawyers with vetted citizen juries soon, then install chatbot-robots to do the job, programmed to NOT afflict further harm on society 24/7 (to relieve the so-called “backlog in cases” joke ).

  • I am aware there is a bond/bail schedule judges follow when setting a dollar amount. I would like to see the formula they use to compute that amount. Sounds like current offenses+probation or not+history+time served. And if so, compare it to a past formulas for the same offenses, if a formula existed or if bond/bail was set soley by judges discretion.

    • Just say no, it’s always up to the judges discretion. Judges Rawls is the ONLY black judge in Alachua county since judge green passed away right after he retired, so she caters to black people/offenders regardless of their criminal history

  • this criminal is 22, all these felonies, why is he not in a work camp for about ten yrs in the heat and cold, retard liberal policies, dont work , dont contribute,
