Rockwell’s comment about Hulk Hogan reveals lack of maturity and prudence

One the many services the Alachua Chronicle provides is a forum to discuss and debate local issues that affect our daily lives in Alachua County. Sadly, our comment section also illustrates how divided, immature, and broken our culture is.
The article about School Board Chair Sarah Rockwell’s Facebook comment is a great example. Just because they’re on the same political team as Rockwell, many people jumped in to defend her celebration of Hulk Hogan’s death because he supported the wrong political party.
Rockwell can think or say whatever she wants about Hulk Hogan’s career or his politics, but celebrating his death exposes a depravity in her character that is unbecoming of an elected official. She’s supposed to serve her entire district, not just the ones who agree with her.
It’s not a First Amendment issue: she shouldn’t be arrested or punished by the government for what she did, but she did expose a moral flaw that makes her unfit for office, and that’s worthy of discussion, particularly if she runs for office again.
Her fellow School Board members should also consider censuring her for violating the Board’s Standards of Ethical Conduct, which includes elements such as “Board members value the worth and dignity of every person” and “Board members strive to achieve and sustain the highest degree of ethical conduct because they are aware of the importance of maintaining the respect and confidence of their colleagues, of students, of parents, and of other members of the community.”
Rockwell’s lack of maturity or prudence that led to broadcasting her opinion on a public forum will further hurt Alachua County Public Schools, which has been reaching out to families that have left their schools, hoping to increase enrollment numbers in the face of reduced funding from the state. How is any right-of-center parent supposed to trust their kids to a school system guided by someone who would celebrate their deaths?
The most enlightening part of this whole issue is how the political sides have rallied to their teams. While Rockwell has now issued an apology, indicating that we’re not the only ones who realized how inappropriate her comment was, we haven’t seen any other prominent Democrats call her out.
With no one in office willing to condemn what Rockwell did, we know that any time we hear Democrats talking about “the community” in their meetings, they’re only talking about the people who agree with them. They’re happy to accept the taxes from the rest of us, but they’ll also be happy to celebrate when we die.

Where is there communism? This was the same talking point those Kerr County Texas republicans ranted about in opposition to taking disaster funding from Biden. They said Biden was communist and would take their homes. Then they discussed how to stop the funding from going to blue states if they weren’t going to spend it (so you think it’s evil but don’t want democrats to benefit from it?). You push the BS communism talking point but I’m still living in a capitalist country, and always have been. Those children may have died because of a bunch of Trump talking point tweet about communism. The same ones you’re parroting now. Those citizens were so brainwashed they refused to accept money to help their community. Propaganda has real world consequences. This is a real world example of people choosing their perceived ideology over the safety of their citizens and children. And if the democrats are so communist, why don’t they ever try and implement communism? Clinton? No communism. Obama? Still no communism. Biden? Still no communism. Private property still exists, there has never been communism in the US. You should stop repeating very obvious propaganda talking points.
The tribalism and hate grew up and was applauded by Right Wing radio for decades. Kind of hypocritical in my view to get on the high horse now Len.

As Chair of the School Board, she is responsible for fostering an inclusive environment and making decisions in the best interest of public education. Allowing Ms. Rockwell to remain in office risks further division within our community and could compromise the integrity of the Alachua County Public Schools. Desantis should remove her from office.

The definition of constituent by elected officials varies, and as we often realize, that duty to represent is situational and determined by each official, and not necessarily uniform.
