Agencies release additional information about Waldo traffic stop of stolen car

Staff report

WALDO, Fla. – Gainesville Police Department (GPD) and Bradford County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) have released official information that is intended to correct some stories in the media today.

Several media outlets have reported that the stolen car that crashed in Waldo on April 20 after a Florida Highway Patrol Trooper executed a PIT maneuver was involved in a homicide at Tiger Bay on the morning of April 19. However, GPD Public Information Officer Brandon Hatzel told Alachua Chronicle that GPD Detectives have no information linking the stolen car to the homicide.

BCSO Chief Deputy Brad Smith told Alachua Chronicle that License Plate Readers in Bradford County alerted to the tag of a Honda CRV that had been reported stolen in Gainesville. BCSO Deputies initiated a chase of the vehicle but pulled back because the stolen car was traveling at high speeds. Florida Highway Patrol took over the pursuit, and BCSO assisted after the car crashed into a concrete utility pole.

Two of the car’s occupants died at the scene, and one more reportedly passed away this week; there are reports that the fourth occupant has also passed away, but that information has not been officially released. Florida Highway Patrol normally releases the age, gender, and hometown of all occupants in serious crashes, but they have not released that information for this crash.

GPD and BCSO also could not confirm information in other media reports about the criminal history of the occupants.

  • “GPD and BCSO also could not confirm information in other media reports about the criminal history of the occupants.”

Could not or would not? It’s usually common procedure for LEOs to run a check on vehicles and/or drivers of vehicles when conducting traffic stops. There may be more to this story besides a stolen car.

  • “GPD Detectives have no information linking the stolen car to the homicide.” They said what they said, please don’t try to twist things!

    • Really? Where did I twist things?

I quoted the story. I also know that drivers who are pulled over for traffic infractions will more often than not have a check done to see if there are outstanding warrants. Add to that the original release that the inhabits of the car were driving at a high rate of speed, with masks, and refused to pull over for law enforcement would lead to the conclusion there is likely more to the story besides the fear of catching Covid while driving.

It was a tragic accident that could have been avoided but for one thing, the driver failed to listen to an authoritative figure. Really unfortunate is that there were 3 others who probably didn’t have a say in the matter.

      • They were kids you have adults that won’t pullover when commanded by officers even with the lights and sirens so think about that also to add to that adults steal car’s every day all over the world this isn’t the first time they have gotten the story wrong and it won’t be the last so many people have so
Much negativity just send your condolences to their family and friends and leave it alone

        • And your point being if adults don’t do pull over kids shouldn’t either? You’re condoning possible criminal behavior with criminal behavior?
Let’s revisit this conversation when you’ve thought that one through and added punctuation.

        • A 40 year old is called a “kid” in your “community” once their lawless ways catch up with them. Same with ole fentanyl Floyd. He’s down their making banana mayonnaise sandwiches for all these “kids” in hell now.

          • Y’all can say some of the most hateful and vile things my goodness. Exactly! What “Community” are you speaking of?

  • Oh well run from the police in a stolen car over a 100 mph, maybe wearing ankle monitors meaning they were probably where they shouldn’t have been. Pit maneuver done, car flips, and hits a innocent cement pole. Now I’ve said it before and I will say it again. Play stupid games and you get stupid prizes. Keep knocking on the devil’s door and it will get answered. All the driver had to do was pull over and stop. The other three could have told him to stop or forced him to stop but in this case it didnt happen. End result suspects died a early death in which is sad but avoidable and the driver controlled those circumstances. Cops did nothing wrong. Message to criminals ” Don’t Run From the Police” you may save your own life.

  • TV 20 app quoted Newberry officials that said 4 teenagers between the ages of 14-16 were involved in this incident.
2 died at the scene and 2 died to later. Of the 4, 3 had active warrants, 2 had ankle monitors, and 2 were Newberry students. Yet another example of failure to comply leading to a bad outcome.

      • One parent home perhaps? I also wonder if they are literate. For the older ones we read about, with the long rap sheets, did they graduate from high school? It’s a tragedy
they were caught in this lifestyle at such an early age.

    • “Bottom Feeder” Sounds appropriate for me. I worked all my life to pay taxes to support (feed?) the so called bottom feeders.

      • your taxes are actually being spent to bomb innocent children in the middle east, hope this helps 🙂

        • You mean, “spent in an effort to kill the Hamas terrorists and those who support them.” Unfortunately, given their cowardice, they like to use innocent children and hospitals to hide behind to continue their acts of tyranny.

I know that’s a small step in trying to undue your indoctrination, but it has to start somewhere.

          • They invoke terror in terrorists.

What’s really scary is the idiots in Gainesville who’ve been brainwashed like you.

Here’s hoping the IDF exterminates Hamas from East to West and North to South – no reason to stop at the sea. That would be funny.

        • In the fog of war, and all the moving parts, civilians, young and old die..War does not discriminate. It has been this way in every war since the first war…Hamas started it and now people are protesting because it didn’t quite go as they intended. Live by it, die by it.

  • Just think….now there won’t be all those future arrests, trials, jail, and prison for this accomplished group of thugs. RIP.
